PROFESSIONAL CODE OF ETHICS

EACH PROFESSIONAL MEMBER OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA CONFERENCE OF MONTESSORI EDUCATORS IS PLEDGED TO OBSERVE THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF HONESTY, INTEGRITY, RESPONSIBILITY, AND EXCELLENCE IN ALL PROFESSIONAL ENDEAVORS:

By employing only those practices and materials to the preparation of each student's environment which are consistent with Montessori principles and with objective standards of health and safety;

By participating in programs of continuing education designed to maintain and enhance professional competence;

By skillfully and regularly observing each student's interaction with the environment in order to ascertain how to enhance, alter, or control that environment so as to maximize that student's opportunities for sound intellectual growth and healthy emotional development;

By respecting the sovereign intellect and natural curiosity which characterize each student's absorbent mind and therefore refraining from making any statements or engaging in any practices which tend to deceive or mislead;

By respecting individual liberty and therefore refraining from any practice designed to indoctrinate, manipulate, or control the student, thereby promoting the growth of intellectual independence, self-esteem, and self-control; and

By always placing professional responsibility to promote the best interests of each student above any responsibility to satisfy the aspirations, wishes, or demands of parents, administrators, regulators, or others in recognition that the primary professional responsibility is not to those who pay, hire, or license the Montessori professional, but to the student who is entrusted to the care and influence of the Montessori environment.
